Lactuca sativa An upright salad variety, which forms a loose cos head at maturity. An outrage of red in the salad bed. This variety was bred by Frank Morton of Wild Garden Seeds in Oregon. Sow from March on outdoors and plant out 20cm apart, or more closely for cut and come again leaves. Average 100 seeds per packet.

An overwintering glasshouse type Butterhead lettuce, which has been Jason’s go-to over winter early spring Butterhead lettuce for a good many years. Produces a nice tasty crisp leaved compact head that stands well. Resistant to many strains of downy mildew. Grown by Jason Horner

Mohican lettuce; Latuca Sativa Capitata

I was introduced to this variety by friend and fellow grower from England Pete Dolliemore. It’s an old commercial variety from the 00’s  and recommended by NIAB at the tieme. It is a Batavian red with a lovely texture and taste and in trials was found to be strong against basal rot, bolting and tipburn. Shelf life is also very good. High Resistance to bremia 1-26,28,31,Pb. Has grown well here in Co.Clare for a few seasons without any issues. Average 100 seeds per packet. Grown by Jason Horner
