Broad Beans Drying Beans
French Beans Runner and Lima Beans
We grow three different species of beans. The common or 'French' bean is Phaseolis Vulgaris, whether it climbs or not. It is self pollinating and so will not normally cross with other beans. It occasionally crosses with Phaseolus coccineus, the Runner bean, which is insect pollinated  and which will cross with other varieties of Runner bean, if within insect range. Both these beans come from Central and South America. The Broad bean Vicia faba is native to the Mediterranean region where it has been cultivated since at least the late 10th millenium BP.
