View Category:Runner Beans

Runner Beans are of south or central American origin and are actually perennial, producing small tubers which regrow in spring. They are not frost hardy so these new shoots don't do very well and it is easier to grow them from seed every year.
Runner beans are hardier than French Beans and can be sown in April to June indoors. Sow 1or 2 seeds in a small pot of compost to avoid root disturbance when planting out. When planting out of doors first apply penty of garden compost or well rotted farm manure and then put the support frame in place. Then sow a seed or two at each cane or plant out a plant.

Harvest the pods when slim and before the seeds have developed. You can save your own seeds by leaving the pods to mature. Seed saving for Peas & Beans
