History
Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) were domesticated independently in ancient Mesoamerica and the Andes, at least 7,000 years ago. and along with maize and squash form the 'Three sisters' native American agriculture.
How to Grow
Sow French Beans undercover in April and outdoors in May and June. If beans are sown in cold wet soil theywill not grow fast enough to get ahead of the slugs. The first warm week in May is best, and sowing can continue into the beginning of June. Climbing beans need support. The pictures below show some ideas.
Pick beans when they are young and tender.
