Its Greek name is marathon, meaning “to grow thin.” It was given to the plant because of its reputation for weight loss. Or, this name is based on the Greek victory over the Persians in 470 B.C. at Marathon which was fought on a field planted with fennel. Fennel was revered by Pliny the Elder thought that it sharpened the sight of snakes. (The things you find on the internet)

Once fennel seedlings get bigger than slugs they are easy to grow. Sow from April to August in modules or directly in the ground. Protect from slugs and plant out or thin to 20cm apart. Early sown crops may bolt and need to be eaten quickly. The bulbs can the earthed up to sweeten the roots.
