Celery and celeriac are derived from a European and Asian marsh plant.
Celery comes in various forms such as leaf, self-blanching and trench. Trench celery involves digging a trench planting the seedlings at the bottom of it and then as they grow filling in the trench. This blanches the leaves and makes them grow long. To me, it seems like a complex from of slug farming creating a deeply satisfying underground food source for them. Self blachching celery, which grows on the surface of the soil is a lot easier. Both celeriac and celery seedlings grow well in modules but do not transplant well if sown directly or in a seed tray. When the seedlings are out-growing their modules plant them out 20cm apart in a damp spot. Keep well weeded until winter. Celeriac is a very successful vegetable in West Cork outwintering and providing delicious bulbs until April.
