View Brassicas

Brassicas have evolved from European seaside plants, tolerant to wind cold and drought. They have been been selected by farmers for 10,000 years or more to create a vast number of varieties from Brussel sprouts to Oil Seed Rape and little red radishes. Cauliflower, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Swedes and Kale are grown to produce vegetables in the winter when other things are in short supply. Calabrese sown in spring will produce curds in summer and autumn. Oriental greens like Mizuna and Pak Choi produce crops quickly in spring and autumn and along with Lettuce and rocket are the mainstay of cut and come again beds.

Brassicas can be sown directly in the ground, but may become a flea beetle or slug snack so are safer started in modules. They can be planted out a month or so later. Timings and spacings vary with variety.
