About

Team Brown Envelope Seeds

Mission

To enable people to grow their own food.

History

The first Brown Envelope Seed Catalogue was produced in 2004, and contained 25 varieties. The decision to produce seeds was also inspired by the low return from cattle farming and the need to increase food security in Ireland. Apart from the Irish Seed Savers Association no vegetable seeds were being produced in the country at that time.  Since then the number of varieties produced by Brown Envelope Seeds and the volume of seed has increased every year.

The Farm

The farm was a dairy farm when we move here in 1988. We milked 12 Jersey cows until 1999 when we changed to beef.  In spring 2005 about half of the farm was planted with broad leaf trees, mostly Oak, Alder and Ash but with small amounts of other species. Now, although we still have a few cattle, seed production is the main activity.

The team consists of Ruth Bullough, Mike Sweeney and Madeline McKeever.
